The Right Way to Read Tabs of Guitars

It is said that guitarists are the most talented musicians. The reason for this is that guitarists learned how to play by themselves or may have just taken some basic lessons and they’re on their way to improving their skills by themselves again.

One reason why guitarists can actually do this is that playing guitar has its own simple method of reading notes; the guitar tablature. Everything is basic and it all depends on the guitarist to find ways on how he can develop his skills.

The guitar tablature is one of the fundamentals of playing a guitar. To some who are just beginning to learn, this may seem complicated but if they are equipped with the basic, it’s never complicated at all. Below are some steps on how you should read the guitar tabs the right way:

1. A guitar staff has 6 lines, all of which are horizontal. Each line represents an instrument string. The bottom staff is for the lowest E string. The second bottom is for A. There are also numbers in the tab and these numbers are for fret. When the guitar tab shows different numbers vertically, this means that you have to play the notes simultaneously. Tablature often comes with chord names and these are usually above the staff. This enables the guitarist to recognize the chords more easily.

2. Know the fundamental flaws of tablature. Guitar tablatures do not scribble any rhythm and some guitar tablatures do not even include rhythm. So it is necessary that you should know this to find ways on how to read this kind of tab. One more difficult thing about guitar tabs is that only guitarists can read it. Unlike other musical notes that can be read by other musicians, guitar tabs are exclusively for guitarist only.

Pull Offs and Hammer On. H and P are very common letters in the guitar tab. H stands for hammer on and is positioned on the original fret. P stands for pull off. Unlike the hammer on, there are some guitar tabs without pull off.

String bends. B or string bend signifies where the note should be bent.  B might be very complicated for first time guitar players. Thus it is necessary to know this as well.

Slides. The symbol / in the guitar tab is used to scribble a slide in an ascending manner whereas back slash signifies scribbling in descending manner.

Again, tablature is the fundamental of guitar. It is therefore necessary that you as a guitarist learn to read it the right way.
