The Different Parts of a Guitar
Generally, a guitar can come in two forms. You have the acoustic and electric guitar. They may look alike, but then they can differ when it comes to their functions and other attachments that you can add to them. However, they do share the same components.
These are the common parts of a guitar:
1. Neck. The neck connects the body of the guitar to its head. You can find in the neck the tuner, headstock, frets, as well as fretboard. Usually, the wood that comprises the fretboard appears completely different from the wood that is being utilized for the rest of the neck. You may have to consider the neck’s bending stress when you’re planning to utilize heavier or thicker strings. It should be strong enough so the neck will be able to resist creating any inconsistent pitch, which commonly happens when you are going to tune your guitar or when the strings are going to be fretted.
2. Body. One of the biggest parts of guitars will be its body. Usually, if you’re talking about classical or acoustic guitars, the body appears to be hollow. This is also called as the sound hole. The purpose of it is to be able to project the guitar’s sound. Electric guitars, on the other hand, don’t have a hollowed-out body but a solid one.
3. Pick-ups. You can find pick-ups in electric guitars. These are actually small microphones, which permit the electric guitar to capture the sound produced by the strings. These are also the reasons why sound can be amplified.
4. Strings. One of the reasons why you are able to produce sound with your guitar is because of the presence of the strings. They run parallel to the guitar’s neck. The entire surface that contains the string is called the fretboard or the fingerboard. With a string, you can have the ability to change the frequency of the string, thus, changing the overall vibration of the sound. However, for you to do that, you need to press the strings to the fingerboard. This way, you can change the string’s length and produce the necessary vibrations.
Strings today are made up of carbon or metallic material. Sometimes they are produced using alloy. You can also play the strings in two ways: through your finger or your pick. It’s advisable that if you’re going to play the guitar for a while, you have to use the latter to avoid possible soreness on your fingers. |
