Right Finger Positioning in Guitars
Surprisingly, one of the biggest challenges when it comes to playing the guitar is how to properly position your fingers on the fretboard. It is extremely essential that even when you are still in the early stages of your learning you can already accomplish proper finger positioning in your guitar. This way, you will not going to be having a very hard time once you proceed to more advanced levels in guitar playing.
How to Position Your Fingers the Right Way
Before knowing how to position your fingers, you need to know first the most comfortable sitting position for you. It is more than just preventing yourself from acquiring a very aching back when you are going to play for a very long time. A correct sitting position will allow you to reach the right frets more efficiently. Your best judge will be the hand that you are going to utilize when you are playing.
There are also two kinds of possible playing positions for you. First, you can go for the classical position, wherein the guitar will be resting on the left leg. You can also opt to place the body of the guitar on the right leg. Simply put, the guitar should be placed in a diagonal position and that the body of the guitar should be placed close to your body. The purpose of this is to prevent you from twisting your guitar a lot of time just so you will be able to achieve the right finger positioning.
When it comes to your fingers, you have to take note of your thumb. It should be placed firmly but gently at the central portion of the underside of the guitar’s neck. The hand, on the other hand, should also be curled. Keep in mind that only the tips of your fingers shall be in contact with every string. This way, you can stop yourself from playing two strings in one time.
If you are not sure if you are applying the right kind of finger pressure on the guitar, you can conduct a simple test. First, you may place a small paper between the second fret in the fretboard and the string. Strum the strings in the E chord. Monitor the sound produced. Subsequently, remove the attached paper. If it is easy for you to remove the paper, then you have applied the right pressure on the strings. If not, then you may have to loosen up a bit. |
